Heat pumps – built for Alabama’s climate

A heat pump works like an air conditioner in summer and runs in reverse in winter, pulling heat from the outdoor air and moving it inside. Because our winters are mild, heat pumps are one of the most efficient ways to heat a home in Bessemer, McCalla and Hueytown – and they are cheaper to run than electric heat strips alone. That is why so many homes around here have one.

Our technicians have the tools and training to install, repair and service heat pumps of every brand, safely and skillfully, for homes and businesses.

Common heat pump problems

  • Not heating or cooling enough – low refrigerant, a dirty coil or a failing compressor.
  • Stuck in defrost or covered in ice – in winter a heat pump frosts over and defrosts itself; heavy ice that does not clear points to a defrost control, sensor or refrigerant problem.
  • “Emergency heat” or “aux heat” always on – the backup heat strips are carrying the load and the power bill climbs.
  • Steam from the outdoor unit – usually normal during defrost; a constant loud whooshing or grinding is not.
  • Reversing valve problems – the system blows warm air in cooling mode or cool air in heating mode.
  • Electrical parts – capacitors, contactors and fan motors, the same as an air conditioner.

Heat pump maintenance

A heat pump runs all year, so it benefits from two check-ups: one before summer and one before winter. We clean the coils, check refrigerant and electrical parts, test the defrost cycle and backup heat and clean the condensate drain. It is part of our annual and semi-annual service agreements.

Heat pump replacement

New heat pumps are far more efficient than units from 15 years ago – new split heat pumps must reach at least 14.3 SEER2 (about 15 SEER) for cooling. Variable-speed models heat well into colder weather and keep humidity under control in summer. We help you choose the right size and type, and we can pair a heat pump with a gas furnace for a dual-fuel system. If you live in a home with older electric heat or a floor furnace, ask us about switching.

Utility companies such as Alabama Power run rebate programs for qualifying heat pumps from time to time – ask us what is available when you get your estimate. And with our in-house financing you can install the new system now and pay over time.

Heat pump questions

Is it normal for my heat pump to freeze up in winter?
A light frost is normal, and the unit defrosts itself every so often (you may see steam). If it stays covered in thick ice or never defrosts, call us.
Why is my emergency heat light on?
The backup heat strips are running instead of the heat pump. It keeps you warm but costs much more to run, so have the system checked soon.
How long does a heat pump last in Alabama?
Usually 10 to 15 years. It runs all year here, so regular maintenance makes a big difference.
Can a heat pump replace my gas furnace?
Yes, in many homes. You can also keep the furnace as backup for the coldest nights – that is called a dual-fuel system.
Do you finance heat pump replacements?
Yes. We offer in-house financing – call to discuss your payment options and see if you qualify.
