Your ducts decide how well your system works

A new air conditioner can only be as good as the ducts that carry its air. In many homes in Bessemer, McCalla and Hueytown the ducts run through a hot attic or a damp crawlspace, where a torn joint or a crushed flex duct leaks cooled air outside – and pulls hot, humid air back in. The result: rooms that never get comfortable, a system that runs all day and higher power bills.

Signs of duct problems

  • Some rooms are much hotter or colder than others.
  • Weak airflow from some vents.
  • Dust that keeps coming back, or a dusty smell when the system starts.
  • A humid, musty house even with the AC running.
  • Whistling or rattling in the ducts.
  • Ducts that are disconnected, crushed or lying on the attic floor.
  • High power bills for the size of the house.

What we do

  • Inspection of accessible ducts in the attic or crawlspace – connections, insulation, support and damage.
  • Sealing and repair – reconnecting and sealing loose joints, replacing torn or crushed sections, adding support.
  • Insulation – ducts in a hot attic need it, or they sweat and lose cooling.
  • Return air improvements – many older homes have too little return, which starves the system of air.
  • New ductwork for additions, for a new system, or when upgrading from a floor furnace or window units to central air.

Ducts and a new system

When you replace an air conditioner or heat pump, we check whether the existing ducts can move enough air for the new equipment. Undersized or leaky ducts make a new high-efficiency system loud and less efficient – fixing them at the same time often costs less than you think. Larger projects can be spread out with our in-house financing.

Ductwork questions

How do I know if my ducts are leaking?
Uneven temperatures, weak airflow, dust and high bills are typical signs. A visual inspection of the attic or crawlspace ducts shows most problems.
Can ducts cause humidity problems?
Yes. Leaky return ducts in an attic or crawlspace pull hot, humid air into the system, and uninsulated ducts can sweat and drip.
Do I need new ducts with a new AC?
Not always. We check the size and condition of your ducts and tell you honestly whether they can be reused, repaired or should be replaced.
