Heating repair before the next cold snap

Alabama winters are mild most of the time – until a cold front drops the temperature into the 20s for a few nights and every heating system in town runs non-stop. That is when weak igniters, dirty flame sensors and tired blower motors give up. Whether you need a simple repair or a new heating system, our Bessemer HVAC technicians are ready, 24/7.

Central heating relies on a furnace or a heat pump to warm the air and a duct system to spread it evenly through your home or business. We repair, maintain and install gas furnaces, electric furnaces and air handlers with heat strips – and the floor furnaces still found in many older homes around Bessemer.

Signs your furnace needs attention

  • The blower runs but the air from the vents is cold.
  • The furnace starts, shuts off after a minute and tries again (short cycling).
  • A burning smell that does not go away after the first few days of the season.
  • Yellow or flickering burner flames instead of steady blue.
  • Banging, rumbling or squealing when the heat comes on.
  • The thermostat calls for heat and nothing happens.
  • Rising gas or power bills.

Furnace repairs we handle

  • Igniters, flame sensors and pilot assemblies.
  • Gas valves, pressure switches and inducer motors.
  • Blower motors, capacitors and belts.
  • Limit switches and control boards.
  • Heat strips and sequencers in electric furnaces and air handlers.
  • Thermostats and wiring – our HVAC and electrical team work together.

Every gas furnace visit includes a safety check of the burners, flue and connections. A cracked heat exchanger can leak carbon monoxide – if we find one, we show you and explain your options. Every home with gas appliances should have working CO alarms.

Floor furnaces in older homes

Many houses in Bessemer and the surrounding towns were built with a floor furnace – a gas heater installed under a grate in the hallway floor, heating the house without ducts. They can last a long time, but they need cleaning and safety checks, and the grate gets hot enough to burn small children and pets. We repair and service floor furnaces, and if you are ready to upgrade from a floor furnace to a central heating and air system, we walk you through the steps – ductwork, equipment options and pricing – so you can decide.

Furnace replacement

When a furnace is 15–20 years old, needs an expensive part or has a cracked heat exchanger, a new one is often the better investment. We help you choose between a high-efficiency gas furnace, a heat pump or a dual-fuel system (a heat pump with a gas furnace as backup for the coldest nights) and size it to your home. Spread the cost with our in-house financing.

Fall heating tune-up

A heating check in October or November – burners, flame sensor, igniter, gas pressure, flue, blower and safety controls – keeps the system safe and ready. It is part of our semi-annual service agreements, together with the spring AC tune-up.

Furnace & heating questions

Do you repair floor furnaces?
Yes. We service and repair floor furnaces in older homes, and we can help you upgrade from a floor furnace to a central heating and air system.
Why does my furnace blow cold air?
Common causes are a dirty flame sensor, a failed igniter, a gas supply problem or a tripped safety switch. A technician can test each part and tell you which it is.
Is a gas furnace or a heat pump better in Alabama?
Both work well here. Heat pumps are efficient in our mild winters; a gas furnace gives strong heat on the coldest nights. Many homes use a heat pump with a gas furnace as backup.
How often should a furnace be checked?
Once a year, ideally in the fall before the first cold snap. It is included in our semi-annual service agreements.
Do you offer emergency heating repair?
Yes – we answer 24/7. When there is no heat in freezing weather, call us right away.
